The cornea is the front surface of the eye. Cornea is clear and its curvature accounts for about 70% of the focusing power of the eye. As such its clarity and health is essential to good vision. Cornea is where the contact lens is placed upon.
Cornea can grossly be divided into 3 major segments, the outer lining (epithelium), the main portion (the stroma), and the inner lining (endothelium).
The epithelium is the exposed portion and is most vulnerable to injury. When someone gets a scratch of their eye, most often they have sustained a "corneal abrasion,"which is an injury to the epithelial layer.
The Visante Anterior Segment OCT is uniquely capable of providing an enormous amount of information about the cornea either by direct imaging, pachymetry or Visante Omni.
I personally use the Visante in cases of Corneal Ulcer, Corneal transplant evaluation or postoperative management, evaluation for IntraLase Enabled Keratoplasty, IntraLase Enabled Lamellar Keratoplasty, Laser Corneal surgery, Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK, or DSEK).
There is lots more to be written about this page and it is currently under construction.
